Youth Luge League

luge

The Youth Luge League is a grassroots program for youths starting at 8 years old. This program develops basic skills and race techniques for participants, it takes about 15 minutes to show a novice slider the basics. From there skills are developed by runs down the track and coaches critiqueing of individual runs.  The program is conducted every Thursday evening and at times, selected youth are eligible to travel to Lake Placid for further screening to be selected for US Luge Junior National camps and ultimately junior national team selection.

This successful youth development program produced five time Olympian and two time medalist Mark Grimmette.

There have been several youth who have moved on to participate in the national programs. While truly an honor and exciting, it is a life changing commitment which requires years of dedication, expense, and skill development to become internationally competitive. Currently there are two youth from this program who have moved on to US Luge Junior National Development Programs.

The USA Luge Slider Search is the official nationwide athlete recruitment tour of USA Luge, targeting young athletes, ages 11-14. The mission of this grass-roots program, established in 1985, is to identify, train and qualify young athletes for the USA Luge Junior Development Team. Athletes who may progress through the six-rung development ladder (Junior Development Team, Junior Team Candidate Select, Junior Team Candidate, Junior National Team Select, Junior National Team, Senior National Team Select) have hopes of one-day becoming members of the Senior National and Olympic Luge Teams.
