How did this all begin?

A few Muskegon people conceived the idea of building a luge and bobsled run that would serve as an Olympic training site. Energies were focused on the luge run. The idea grew and gained community support and political support from local legislators, who worked toward making state funding available for the construction and operation of the luge. By 1984, community support grew into a love affair with the luge, where countless hours of labor, construction materials, and equipment were donated to see the project completed. Since it's completion, the track has produced one Olympic athlete, Mark Grimmette, 1998 Bronze Medal and 2002 Silver Medal winner.  As our youth luge program grows, we hope to produce more Olympic athletes in the future.

The luge attracts participants and spectators from all over the country and has certainly sparked that Olympic spirit in Muskegon County and surrounding areas. Being one of only four tracks in the United States along with our learn to slide program, allows our track the title "the most publicly accessible luge track in North America".

Frequently Asked Questions About The Luge

Q. What can I expect when I arrive for a luge lesson?

A. When you arrive at the sports lodge you will need to  approach the rental counter Here is where you will pay, and fill out the necessary paperwork to use the luge.  You may expedite this process by down-loading your waiver from this site and have completely filled out all sections (Waiver and Release of Liability and  Grant of Permission).  We will then check your health insurance.  Your health card must be shown to us.  A completed waiver and proof of health insurance are required to use the luge track.

After receiving your pass, you will wait in the lodge to be notified of the start of your lesson.  At this time, you will need to find a helmet that fits.

The first 15 minutes of the lesson will be instructional.  Your coach will be demonstrating proper form, steering and stopping techniques.  The rest of your lesson time will be spent taking runs down the luge track.  You will start at the drop in point on the track, which is about 1/2 way up the track.  After a run or two from this point, or when you feel comfortable, you will begin taking runs from the Public Start Ramp, about 3/4 of the way up the track.  The very top starting point of the track is the Grimmette Peak.  For safety reasons, and because this is an expert start,  lesson participants will not be allowed to advance to the Grimmette Peak starting point, where speeds of over 40 mph can be reached.  This is only open to experienced luge club members.

Q. How safe is it?

A.  Our trained coaches are all experienced sliders and our program is designed for the novice slider. You will only be allowed to progress to higher portions of the track if you demonstrate proficient sliding ability and the coach feels you are capable of riding safely. We have very few injuries and those that do occur are genuinely a bump or bruised arm.  As with any sport, especially winter sports on ice,  there is a risk of injury and all participants must sign a waiver that they understand and take personal responsibility for this risk.

Q. How old/tall do you have to be?

A.  Since size and physical ability are key factors in being able steer the sled.  We allow anyone 48" or taller and from 8 years old on up to participate.

Q. What do I wear?

A. You will need to dress warmly since you will be outside the entire time.  Layers are of key importance.  We recommend wearing an older jacket because if you bump the wall of the track, your jacket may get friction burns or rip.  Much of the steering of the sled is done with your ankles and lower legs.  Lightweight boots or shoes are recommended so as to not hinder your steering ability.  Elbow pads are also highly recommended.  We provide you with a helmet.
