The Muskegon Learn To Luge Experience takes place at our winter sports complex, which has one of the four luge tracks that exist the United States. The Muskegon Luge is considered the most publicly accessible track in this country . Shorter in overall length than Olympic tracks located in New York and Salt Lake City, the Muskegon track provides an Olympic thrill with the safety of the participant in mind. The track was designed by three-time Olympian Frank Masley. The track consists of six curves and two starting areas.
The Muskegon Luge program is proud of its safety record. Safety is the number one priority when teaching new sliders or conducting races with seasoned sliders. Participants are outfitted with elbow pads, a helmet, and a well-maintained luge sled. An instructor carefully goes over each part of the sled with a beginning slider and teaches easy to learn methods of steering the sled. The program has instructed thousands of sliders to safely and successfully slide in our Learn To Luge program – participants ranging in age from 8 to the mid-80’s. While luge is referred to the fastest sport on ice. our track is designed for the novice slider at slower speeds than that of a Olympic track where sliders can reach speeds of 90+ mph…. it takes years of practice to slide safely at those speeds. The top speeds on our track from the public start is approx 30 mph on a good iceday although to most new sliders it still feels like 90 mph!!! The size of each session is limited, so participants can expect to get 3-8 runs depending on how organized and efficient the group is. At the end of each session the coaches will provide all participants with a certificate. A *medal ceremony will be held to recognize the fastest sliders.
* All luge runs are timed, however, weather complications or mechanical breakdown of timing equipment sometimes occurs and a medal ceremony or timing of runs is not a guaranteed component of the Learn To Luge session
The sleds weigh anywhere from 25-40 lbs and are transported up a flight of stairs to the top of the luge track by human power…you! If you are bringing young children, they will most likely need adult help to get their sled back up the hill. If you have heart troubles or health issues that may be complicated by climbing stairs or participating in adrenaline pumping outdoor thrill sports, the Muskegon Learn Luge Experience is not recommended.
Bridge Start- This is the highest point the Learn To Luge sliders are allowed to slide from. From this point you will slide at speeds of over 30mph and cover approx 650 ft of track in 17 seconds!!!
Grimmette Peak- This is the top start of the track . For safety reasons, only experienced sliders are allowed to slide from this point. They must be a Muskegon Luge Club member, and they must first pass a luge specific sports physical. If you are interested in sliding from Grimmette Peak, please contact lugemuskegon@gmail.com
The track is operated and maintained by a nonprofit organization called the Muskegon Sports Council. Luge track functions and coaching of the public clinics races are assisted by members of the Muskegon Luge Club and by our Junior Youth Luge Program some who are aspiring Olympians earning funds to help support their quest to make it onto the Junior National US Luge Team programs in Lake Placid or Salt Lake.
Both paid and volunteer staff work hard every year to operate this facility and your support is greatly appreciated…….with a little cooperation from Mother Nature , you will most certainly have a great time learning the sport of luge!!!
