Created by an Olympian. Open To Mortals!
The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex luge track is one of only four luge tracks that exist in the United States. Shorter in length than the Olympic tracks in Lake Placid and Salt Lake City, the Muskegon track provides an Olympic thrill with the safety of the participant in mind.
Learn to Luge like an Olympian
We have everything you need to learn the sport of luge. You will be sliding down an 850′ track designed by three-time Olympian Frank Masley. It consists of six curves and two starting areas. Public participants slide from the 3/4 mark at speeds up to 30 mph. Our track is designed specifically for general public use and those who have never tried luge before!
While Olympians do not generally train here, we serve as a public and youth development seeding program to the USA Luge program. Five time Olympian and two time Olympic medalist Mark Grimmette got his start here. Currently we have two young gentlemen from our program as team members on the USA National Team, Jake Hyrns and Riley Stohr.
Luge Equipment & Training
You will receive instruction and tips from our trained athletes. We provide all necessary equipment, including one of our finely tuned Austrian or Latvian luge sleds, your own sanitized helmet, and forearm pads. Sleds weigh between 30-40 lbs and must be carried to the top of the track. You should come prepared with warm clothing, including shoes that are comfortable for climbing stairs in and good padded gloves to help protect your hands (not finger gloves). You will also want to wear a jacket or outer layer that you don’t mind damaging (brushing against the sidewall can cause friction burns or tearing in polyester materials).
Your luge coach will initially spend approximately 15 minutes at the beginning of your session teaching you steering and safety techniques. You are then free to slide as many times as possible during your session. We time your runs at the end of the session and awards are given at the podiums for the top finishers in each group.
Special Insurance Requirement
Our luge insurance provider requires ALL luge participants to show proof of health insurance and a signed waiver in order to participate in luge on our track.
